Too bad the oracle text does no longer specify that he has to come into play from your hand. Otherwise he could be abused in Merc decks.

The Portal version of Hidden Horror. Big advantage: Knight subtype regarding tribal use. Regarding Oracle change it's also funny to know how the "trigger only when hardcast" restriction used to be profitable in that manner. Regarding the former Mercenary synergy, Cateran Summons should also find use in such a knight deck for aforementioned reasons, especially since this card as well as Haakon synergize with changeling spells including stuff like Nameless Inversion.
Here's a little combo for mercenary deck lovers. One of the biggest problems with mercenaries is that they search from up to down, unlike rebel from down to up. With that said, you can play Mercenary Knight, then use Doomed Necromancer to bring the big creature back. Both of them are mercenaries so they could be fetched too.

This is better than Hidden Horror in almost every way, unless you're running Horror tribal. (didn't think so) Mercenary Knight is more splashable, and has two relevant creature types.
Deserves a higher rating than it has now...

Completely unjustifiable oracle wording change. The drawback was only meant to trigger when played from the hand, it's as clear as day on the face of the card. What's the matter Wizards, afraid Mercenary decks are going to start running roughshod over Legacy if this guy had his correct wording? I suppose this would be more broken than Time Vault if you allowed it to be played how it was printed.
