Kind of weird that of this and Harvest Wurm, the one you want to play first costs 1 more. I don't think they'd play a head-scratching bombo like this today.

Think about it this way: On turn 3 you play this and discard the land, on turn 4 you play Harvest Wurm and have the land to play if you already hadn't and two mana open.
I think it's the bluntness of it. "Elvish expression meaning 'ruined crops.'" I mean, do Elves even have crops? Don't they hunt/gather and such? They don't seem like the type to farm.

This and Harvest Wurm being in the same set definitely isn't coincidence. It's still a cheap (and most importantly, splashable) 4/4. Potentially messing up your lands hurts, but it's still pretty good.

He's pretty good! A 4/4 is obviously undercosted at 3 mana, especially with only one coloured mana. His drawback can impede your tempo, but keep in mind that there is essentially nothing lost if you discard a land but still have another to play next turn. Or if you don't need more than 3 or so for the deck to get rolling, I suppose. His drawback doesn't hurt quite like sacrificing a land.
I know everyone is miffed that he costs 1 more than Harvest Wurm even though that's the one you want to drop after, but that Wurm is meant to follow Rogue Elephant, not this guy. Then Fallow Wurm lets you discard the land that Harvest Wurm brought back. See? It all works out after all.

I think the appropriate set of plays for this guy is:
Forest, Mana Dork
Forest, Rogue Elephant, Harvest Wurm
Forest, Fallow Wurm
Bull Elephant?
