This is a long-running theme with dual-color mana givers. Kinda like Sulfurous Springs and the rest of that land cycle. It's 'I have one mana, but when i really need that one color..'

It seems that 2-mana artifact is the equivalent of a land. Guardian Idol fits the same pattern, but is weaker than Mishra's Factory. This can probably be excused by the fact that the Factory is pretty damn strong.
