Best in a control deck, preferably blue or white, otherwise don't bother.

wish it didn't enter tapped, like that i'd actually like it. just as it is, it isn't that great. it has a decent artwork, though.

Yeah, I think if this was printed today, it would see play in standard constructed control decks like everflowing chalice is. The ability to turn into a guy would actually be quite relevant, as celestial colonnade has shown.

With the New Phyrexia Splicers and Precursor Golem around.... this could be quite fun. 2/2? how about a 3/3 with first strike, vigilance and flying?

It could stand to have an activation cost of only {1}, but overall an acceptable card. Also, this in part inspired the totem series from Time Spiral.

Being a mana acceleration as well as a potential creature, Guardian Idol is ideal for decks that focus on sweeping effect like Death Cloud and Wildfire.

A relatively lame remake of Mishra's Factory, other than the permanent artifact nature. Which I suppose is a benefit in this block.
Tap to give an artifact creature +1/+1 would have been a nice addition though.

I love this card. I use it in my Vish Kal EDH deck and my Tajic EDH deck.
In my Vish Kal deck, I use it as ramp (since that deck needs all the ramp it can get), and as an emergency chump for eating with my commander. Being able to shoot it at something for just 2 mana to activate is quite useful.
In my Tajic deck, it ramps out my commander on turn 3 and helps activate battalion in the later stages of the game.
I think people undervalue this card. It is basically rampant growth for colourless, but can become a creature instead of thinning your deck/colour fixing.
