God I hate this card. I kept getting it as my rare instead of Ball Lightning or a dual land or Jokulhaups... in hindsight I think maybe it was the universe trying to tell me not to buy Fifth Edition.

Target player summons a judge to attempt to explain banding to both players. If either player dies of old age while trying to figure it out, the game ends in a draw.

Everything with banding on the card gets 0.5 for banding being such a horrible, horrible rule.

To bad it isn't: "Target legends gains bands with other legends until end of turn!" Then, it would be even more broken than it already is!

Apparently Baton of Morale was too good to include in fifth edition.

Back in the day, I would open these and be so annoyed that it wasn't a better card. I would use them as throwing stars with friends.

Fast forward 10 years and now I see the amazing power of this card.

One of the weaknesses of banding was that it A.) it was limited to pretty much white creatures and B.) they tended to be smaller weaker creatures. (the complex rules didn't weaken the ability, just made it confusing)

The helm is the perfect because it circumvents the two major weaknesses that existed.

Take Saprazzan Heir from Mercadian Masques - a 1/1 for 1U that when it attacks and is blocked, you draw three cards. If it is blocked, it will likely die.

Use the helm though, and give the Heir banding, now band it with a large creature and your opponent has to determine if it's worth blocking the large creature to give you 3 cards or take a large amount of damage.

I don't see why everyone hates on banding, it it would be nice to see it make a comeback. Just think of it as a purely defensive ability, your Goldenglow Moth can be gaining you 4 and practically never die since banding allows you to assign damage. Hell, band it with a Guard Gomozoa and it's party time. Sure there are better combos but banding still gets a bad rap.

Also I'm honestly surprised there isn't a white enchantment that gives banding to all your creatures.

Banding is a cool ability which appreciates both technique and skill. All of you guys complaining about banding being so confusing and worthless should go play Candy Land instead of Magic.

This is a much better card than people are saying. Defensive banding allows you to use a few chump blockers to kill something bigger and only lose one of your 1-drop chumps in exchange. Offensive banding allows you to attack with a beatstick banded with some expendable trash and not worry about whatever they block it with.

Banding lets you control what you trade off, exchanging your weaker creatures for your opponent's stronger ones (or leaving them in a situation where they can't block or can't attack respectively, depending on how you use it.) It's a versatile and powerful ability if used right.

"Hurr durr, banding iz too complicated for my feeble brain!!"

Helm of Chatzuk. Mono Artifact.
If target opponent still cannot figure out what banding does after all these years, (s)he has an IQ less than 70 and may no longer play Magic: The Gathering, but must play World of Warcrack or Grand Theft Lotto instead.

Just because banding is complicated doesn't mean that the card is bad, guys. The great thing about Helm of Chatzuk is that it can give banding to creatures that don't suck.

@DrJack

How about you find some smart friends of yours who don't know how banding works, teach them the basics of Magic if they do not already, then show them the reminder text for banding on the gatherer. After that, ask them what would happen in the specific situations which are unintuitive (such as if you attack with a flying creature and banding creature and you band them together, can a creature without flying block the band). See how often they are correct.

My point is that Banding has problems, and it doesn't have to do with Wizards being condescending (at least not in the case of banding)
