I plan to use this to summon The Unspeakable during a MM draft. Haven't worked out the details yet. I'll get back to you.

Well, Ponder is banned in Modern.

@ NuckChorris, that... is true.

Where is Serum Visions? That's a spell that should've been spoiled along side Dark Confidant. It's played in the same slot as Preordain would be, had it not been banned. I guess if they printed that, they'd have to also print Lose Hope, Magma Jet, and-

WAIT, WHERE'S MAGMA JET?! IT'S... IT'S... WHAT?

Eh, Wizards are reprinting the best of the basic arcane cards. I can't complain about that, it'll stop everything thinking all of it sucked. The Splice mechanic can be pretty badass when you build a deck around it appropriately.

They missed a trick with The Unspeakable though. This is a good splice bridge and all, but that was a fun little trick.

Wizards, couldn't you have just dropped the whole Spirit/Arcane thing from Modern Masters and given us new art for Ponder or Serum Visions?
Edit: @Atali
Yes, but no Arcane cards are played in Modern.

The reason for this card vs. Serum Visions or Ponder or any of the others is simply that it's an instant and an arcane. You can cast it on your opponent's turn in order to splice something else, and you get a card. Outside of splice decks, not great. In splice decks--as well as decks that have effects that trigger when you draw a card--quite handy.

I personally think arcane is great and underutilized. It was big in Kamigawa, but Wizards was just way too cautious with that block and it suffered from major Mercadian Masques syndrome, so much of it being lackluster in power and potential compared to other blocks. Still, many of its cards and mechanics manage to endure. I would love to see it tied in with wizard tribal at some point, I would have thought Izzet would be the ideal group to pick it up both thematically and mechanically.

But alas, it was not to be, and I've rambled on. It's a mediocre card if all you want to do is draw a card, but it's a decent card if you're comboing it.

@Ferlord: Magma Jet was biding its time for a triumphant return in Theros.

A fine target for a splice deck, Glacial Ray turns Reach Through Mists into an Electrolyze without the ability to split up the damage. The advantage with Splice spells lies in the ability to cast more spells through a single card, though - double Glacial Ray spliced onto this is quite good for the cost, and could potentially be a 2 for 0 (burn two creatures and replace Reach with a new card) at instant speed for 5 mana - and then you've still got two Glacial Rays in your hand to cast again later.
