1) cant lose for having too little life 2) no spells can be cast other than creatures, leaving MOST ways to kill this useless 3) anytime you take damage you get a token that you can then sacrifice 4) pestilence deals damage to everything on the field, takes care of those pesky birds if you cant get through them.
Black + White combo for near immortality and it leaves you open to beat your opponent to death with either doves or pestilence them to death (while leaving one creature on the field).

One of those cards that challenges people to figure out ways to totally break it.

This + Worship means whenever you take damage you dont sac anything (and the first time, you actually get to draw).

I wish I owned this card. It's so beautiful. It cries out for me to make a beautiful painting of a deck with it as the subject. I need it...eternal life will be mine! And not a soul alive can stop me! Huh...so that's how it happens...

@Kurham Tokens aren't cards, so it wouldn't work...

@Kurhan - you can't sacrifice the soldiers you get from Darien, you have to sacrifice nontoken creatures.

@Kurhan-Nice thought, but the Lich requires nontonken sacrifices to feed its bloodlust.
One of several Lich cards which effectually say, "if you're going to lose the game, you might as well go in a really cool and spectacular way."

@psyklone Worship doesn't work as it doesn't affect the damage, just your life total.
I still contend, to this very day, that that the best combo for Lich is Illusions of Grandeur. If you can't figure our how to win after drawing TWENTY FREAKING CARDS, your deck was destined to fail.

I remember back in the day I started playing (Fallen Empires/Revised), my friends thought this was the stupidest card ever, because playing it meant you immediately lost the game.
Upon reflection, I see the original text does not seem to state anywhere that you now do not lose the game anymore for having 0 or less life...

@psyklone Actually no- if you had actually bothered to read the rulings on Worship, you would have noticed that Worship does not prevent damage, and Lich's third ability triggers when you take damage. So you still have to sacrifice permanents (probably Worship- since it's pretty worthless with Lich in play).
All that this combo accomplishes is prevent your life total from dropping into the negatives.
