I usually really hate counters this expensive, but this thing is really strong. I don't see it being used too much as a standard counterspell, though.

Come on. This is WAY better than Control Magic or Steal Artifact! First, it gives you the strength of a counter spell, then, if the situation is in your favor, it gives you both strengths of Control Magic and Steal Artifact and (here it comes) the effect is permanent!

Keeping the open turn after turn made this worse than Control Magic, back when we control folks tested it. It's still a really fun counterspell in Commander, where there are plenty of awesome targets in the late game.

Powerful now, and very powerful for its time. Using Cancel as the modern standard, you spontaneously stole a creature for an extra two mana when you play this.
This new Ravnica block has been friendly to Desertion as well. I have a with Goblin Electromancer and Guttersnipe and this would be efficiently countering, stealing a creature and dealing damage.
