Is this really that bad? With stuff like Breezekeeper and Sandbar Crocodile an upkeep of 1 life seems worth it. There's also Taniwha, but then you'd need to figure out some way around the land drawback.

Use this with something like Teferi's Realm, to prevent permanents you care about from phasing out. E.g. at your upkeep, choose "creature", to make all creatures phase out, and then bind the ones you want to keep. So your creatures are there, everyone else has no creatures.
