No one in their right mind would put this card in any deck! Zero offensive capabilities and a mediocre defensive ability!

I've always wondered why an abbey matrons point and scream at me. Maybe it's because they are pained at their own uselessness?

Wow...I'm stupid...I used to think that the new rules made this card useless, but in fact, you can still use Abbey Matron. At the end of the declare blocler's step, just use her ability. Now that I think about it, she ain't half bad.

Although shes a useless card she did force me to realize something in my noob days. That one can declare blockers then use creature abilities before damage resolves.

Let me break this down for anyone who doesn't understand modern MTG. In the old days, sure she wasn't all that great. She just made bolt bait, not bolt bait. But nowadays? She is using her ability after blockers are attacked in an environment where not everyone plays mono or dual chrome decks. Firstly, she needs only one white mana, and two colorless. SO many spells and abilities reduce colorless casting costs. Secondly she has at least one of her attributes(In this case toughness) equal to her converted mana cost, not such a common thing. Last, but certainly not least, her activation cost is one white, to gain more toughness than the cost, extremely rare. She is outdone by Boa Constrictorin every way, but with so many spells that rearrange power and toughness, this card is so easily exploited. Or her toughness is nice life gain with various sacrifice abilities.

Can block those big 5 power creatures as early as turn 4. The only reason you'd pick this over a wall is because it can attack. But even so if it does without vigilance it loses it's un-boltability.

This isn't THAT bad, especially considering its in homelands. Go look at some other cards in homelands then tell me this card is "useless"

It seems to me that, while white is known for gaining life, the most practical use for this card (aside from being an expensive non-defender blocker) would be to sacrifice it to Diamond Valley.
I could see people using Twisted Image + Vanish into Memory in a white/blue deck, or About Face + Fling in a white/red deck, but I would strongly recommend looking for less demanding alternatives such as Indomitable Ancients, or pretty much any wall. At least you don't have to wait for summoning sickness to wear before boosting the toughness.

Holy Cow! A matron that can kill my Arc Runner and survive.
When this was printed tapped blockers didn't deal damage, but that thing has gone the way of Dodo.
