That's what happens when you feed it after midnight.

I lOve it when old cards get reprinted. Welcome to standard for the first time since 4th, iirc. Should be a great pull in limited.

Versatile in limited, but otherwise not very good.

Glad it's not a rare anymore.

"with defender in addition to its other types."

... Is there something I'm missing?

If the third option is chosen, it gains the Wall creature type in addition to being a Shapeshifter.

I love weird cards that can be one of three different creatures, but don't really ''combo'' with themselves--

they aren't Timmy, they aren't Johnny, they certainly aren't Spike- they're just- Fun :)

3/3 for 4 with no color requirements is pretty damn good in limited.

It's been 15 years, and it still hasn't decided what it wants to be...

Uhh
Isn't the wording kinda wrong? Seems like if you pick the third option, it becomes a
Creature - Shapeshifter Wall Defender
As it says "with defender in ADDITION to its other TYPES."

Or?

DoubleTarget has it

It's either

Primal Clay
Artifact creature - Shapeshifter
3/3

or

Primal Clay
Artifact creature - Shapeshifter
Flying
2/2

or

Primal Clay
Artifact creature - Shapeshifter Wall
Defender
1/6

The "in addition to it's other types" clause is there to make it Shapeshifter Wall and not just a Shapeshifter. Reason being in the old days, walls couldn't attack, that was just the rule. Defender wasn't a thing. Once that changed, all walls automatically got defender, and any reprints of old cards mentioning walls needed all this janky crap added.

Why is it that such a disappointing creature is fun to see again?

I love this card :) Very flexible, very useful. You can have it as a 3/3 beefy creature, or a 2/2 not-so-beefy but have evasion and can block evasion, or as a 1/6 wall to fend off those pesky goblins.

The original art is way better. Good card though in limited.

3.5/5

(hint: choose the wall)

In the same set as Canyon Minotaur!

This is a great artifact creature. Pros like me know exactly which iteration of this creature to choose for which situation.

3/3 for 4 is fair.
2/2 flier for 4 is a bit inefficient.
1/6 defender for 4 is fair.

He's nothing special, but he doesn't need to be. All he needs to be is given something to do, and he'll do it. Inefficiently, but he'll do it nonetheless.

I use this with Axebane Guardian in my red/green mana ramp/ burn deck. An underrated card for sure.

This would actually be pretty awesome in limited. For most constructed venues, I couldn't see myself ever playing it. :/

(Am I the only one who actually finds lotsofpoopy's "Pros like me" comments to be hilarious? Maybe I like the irony in that way...)

People are dissatisfied with Millenial Gargoyle because he compares unfavorably to this. This is the high end of what uncommons should get in Artifacts. Primal Clay was once a Rare, and was still good to open then as it is now. He is correct as an uncommon for the Power Creep in the game, but Power Creep is not half as bad as people think it is when Pearled Unicorn was an Alpha card and Riot Devils was in Avacyn Restored.

Today's Development column shows that WOTC is still thinking in terms of Dark Banishing and Wind Drake. For their colors, I think we've moved a bit beyond that, but not very far, and I *definitely* think we shouldn't hastily be asking our colorless artifacts to be better than Wind Drakes at this point unless they are at least Rare. The cascade of effects that bumping Artifacts up results in is a quick way to seriously Power Creep a color. Memnite is actually a huge freaking deal for this reason. It's not just a 0-drop, it's a colorless 0-drop, which means that theoretically Grizzly Bears is obsolete for a 2-cost Green Creature, the Creatures Color. But if Wizards made a {1}{G} 2/3 creature with no drawbacks at common...that would be very major. They haven't done that yet to my knowledge, with good reason.

If only it had Flash! And why doesn't hit have "is all types of creatures at once" ?

Nice to have options. It's versatile, at least. Strictly better than Millennial Gargoyle.

I always liked this card. There was quite a shortage of good creatures way back when, so it's nice to see one that's playable, at least by Limited standards. It's even nicer to see it reprinted.
