What do you mean by "strictly worse than cancel"? Counterspell makes Cancel an obsolete piece of trash. Really, all Cancel is Conterspell with one extra mana. If for any reason I have misinterpreted what you meant to say, (such as you meant to say that Cancel is worse than Counterspell) then I suggest that you fix it; just because you have commented on 363 cards does not excuse you from writing crappy comments.

Still my favorite counterspell art from back in the day. I replaced all my Revised versions when these came out. And still the second best counterspell ever printed. Miss you, ole gal.

Yea, I think people are trying to do a Storm Crow kinda thing with Cancel. Not gonna work though. I mean no one likes to see cards get nerfed, and I know it might seem like Wizards is picking on blue, but Counterspell really WAS overpowered. From the beginning of the game until well after Tempest, a disproportionate number of the viable decks were blue. Almost all of the power nine cards are blue. Considering that 99% of creatures back then were god-awful and non-creature spells often unintentionally powerful, it was fairly easy to lock down the board. And honestly, can anyone really argue that those decks were fun to play against? Counterspell went into any blue deck because if you think about it, it's a removal spell for EVERYTHING. Adding the one extra mana at least makes the fact that you can't remove something once it's cast matter slightly. Still, I hate when they just straight up nerf cards, and no one liked it when Lightning Bolt was replaced by Shock, even though that might have been balanced too. It screams lazy card design. I much prefer when they do something like raise the casting cost but add another ability, making it slightly weaker in the process.
