I guess this was supposed to be the anti-valakut, the molten pinnacle.

Doesnt do its job well enough though.

Nothing can counter Valakut that can't withstand Valakut. This thing is a FAIL.

Obviously an anti-valakut card. But a good life gain card nonetheless.

Nothing is sacred for Phyrexia... they turned angels into some disgusting looking puppets.

Standard or not - This thing is going to be golden in casual multiplayer!

Am I the only one who finds the art on this card genuinely disturbing?

I'm not saying I won't play it. But I will shudder every time I draw one.

If you can get it out early, and have a bunch of Phyrexain mana cards, go nuts.

Otherwise, needs another point of toughness.

Angels: a symbol of grace, beauty, justice...
Anything you can imagine as "right".
This card art is disturbing, showing a mad angel, just completely messed up.
I love it.

Anti-landfall is something worth exploring, I think.

I've got a foiled out Angel EDH deck and I can't bring myself to play this hideous card in there...I sure hope at some future date this ugly art gets replaced with one that is more fitting of the angel tribe. Why couldn't they have gone more with the type of angel art found on new phyrexia's enslave instead of this?

Going to be playing a casual 10 way game soon enough, really tempted to have a few of these... around 30 life a turn, thank you very much :D

I would say this guy is amazing if the format were still slow. Fact is, it's fast. By the time you can play this guy, your opponent should already be at a high enough land count for them not to care. Or simply kill this guy. Cards upwards of 4 mana have dropped significantly in value (exempting bombs, obviously); probably 7th pick.

@infernox10: That's not how I imagine angels. Angels are nothing more than tools. Divine servants bereft of free will, and whose only purpose is to further the cause of their deity. Seeing from that perspective, this interpretation is not that disturbing to me.

She hates volcanoes. Probably an effect of Phyresis, cause Phyrexia hates red.

People mention valakut but not baneslayer. No one even plays baneslayers anymore, what's up with that?

Not bad in casual, I think. It tends to draw a burn spell. Just watch out when Valakut shows up.

Keep your angels, particularly Serra Angel and Baneslayer Angel away from Phyrexian hands

Or they will turn into an ugly monster (but still useful) like this one

the 'reverse landfall' ability is actually in-theme. In theme with WoTC general policy, not so much New Phyrexia block mechanics, but...they do try to make sure they have crossblock synergies like this that, at first look out of place, but in the greater context of designing more than one block at a time, makes sense. These kinds of cards tend to help shape Standard. This one just didn't have quite as much impact.

On the art: Yes, I know it's a Phyrexian, but...it's still an Angel. being ugly feels wrong for an Angel. An evil, twisted Angel should look a bit more, I dunno....remember the creatures the Black Riders rode in Two Towers and RotK? They're not actually ugly, but they're clearly evil, and just a bit unnatural, too. The word Tokien most commonly used to describe 'monstrous' servants/creations of the Enemy was: Fell.

I understand perfectly why the rest of the Phyrexians look transgressive, mutated, freakish and monstrous, but I wished a little bit more of the Angel's 'majestic' nature had survived through the Phyresis, so that a more 'Fell' rather than 'Freaky' creature would be the result. The other creatures in this block, Wizards nailed out of the park. Check out the Sphinxes- THOSE look 'Fell', and 'monstrous', but...in a kind of awesome way. This creature doesn't look awesome...it looks more like Angel-meets-Gollum rather than Angel-meets-Nazgul.

Getting the right look for a 'Phyrexian Angel' is probably about the most difficult art to get 'right', but there's a very distinct difference I feel between this and Chancellor of the Annex, and I like the Chancellor better.

Funny how people complain about the art on this. Explaining that its one ugly angel, and they will never use it because it doesn't look like an angel.

Actually you would be wrong about that. This Angel is the closest thing what an angel really did and looked like out of any to date. Flavor wise, its not completely spot on. its ability is a little weird, but works. Its flavor text is SPOT ON! And the picture is too tame to be an angel. The angel imagery that has been popularized in our culture is extremely far off from the truth. Some angels where wheels, others had 4 faces. Some had feet made of fire with arms of water.

I don't usually like angels in magic because I know what they are capable of in their Mythology. Angels are seriously nurfed for MTG. They also don't fit in the white ideal very well. They would much better match blue with SOME white. Although Colorless would work much better then any one color to match their cosmic universal application.

I do have to give MTG props for their angels being made out of pure white mana. Although they could be made out any mana, this is close enough to the idea that Angels are holy spirits.

A counter Landfall card. Not bad, And a 3/3 Flier for 5 isn't that bad either. sure, its a bit underpowered, but if you play against a green deck that trives on lands, this will keep you alive, big time.

If the two whites were phyrexian whites, this would be much better. Sure, you lose 4 life, but you'll quickly make it back up!
