Snaxme is right, Hideous End Maybe good, since it can still deal the two damage to the player, even if the spell does not kill the creature, but here we have a counterspell that can both negate A spell and bolt the person, all in the same turn!! So if you're up against a BLACK DECK, and you're using HIDEOUS END to GET RID OF THEIR CREATURES, then yes, you have a pH. D in "Duuuuuuuh" from UMN, the University of MTG Noobs...

Snaxme is my hero of the day for that last sentence "so you good sir are an idiot" and as for the card FOR THE LOVE OF GOD REPRINT THIS

Undermine is great, but we're all forgetting the most important part- the AWESOME flavor text.

Hideous End instead of Undermine?! Are you daft?! This is a counterspell, which can negate ANYTHING, while it's being cast. Hideous End is a second rate removal spell (creature only, might I add), who's only redeeming factor is being cheap (money wise), and causing the enemy to lose 2 life.

So, you, good sir, are an idiot.

EDIT FOR GREAT JUSTICE: If Wizards goes forward with Overextended, I'd bet my left testicle this will see play. OFF TO GET A PLAYSET I GO.

I really like countersquall, and it's great, but this...this is INSANE.

Hands down my favorite card in the game. Well-costed, hard counter, and, as the flavor text notes, adds insult to injury. There is nothing sweeter than countering someone's spell with this when they are at 3 or lower life.

It's not even a Bolt (which can be prevented, or redirected, etc.) but a live loss, to " controller", not targeted. Awesome.

best...counter...ever. Not to mention the fact its worth a fair amount of money. Love the flavor text too.

This is the reason why I love black and blue.
This needs truly needs to be reprinted.

Read Undermine's flavor text and then read desertion's flavor text.
Heehee.

So awesome, but so ridiculously undercosted for what it does. Let's look at the other multi-colored counterspells from this block:

Absorb - Healing Salve stapled to a Counterspell.
Mystic Snake - Grizzly Bears stapled to a Counterspell.
Suffocating Blast - Incinerate stapled to a Counterspell.

A pretty obvious pattern, and yet when it comes to Undermine it's not just "X stapled to a Counterspell". There's nothing out there that makes an opponent lose three life (not damage, but lose life) for one black mana. Compared to the others, the "bonus" effect is unbelievably powerful.

...I still have a playset of them though, for reference. Just because it's a stand-out in this little counterspell mini-cycle doesn't mean I won't play with it.

There was a mega cycle of rare, multicolored counterspells in the Invasion block. Mystic Snake, Absorb, this, and Suffocating Blast. This is clearly the best one.

5/5 counterspell. The mana costs may look excessive but considering you get a hard counter (2 blue)and a 3 life loss (1 black) this is very very cost efficient.

I once lost a game cos my opponent used it on my fully kicked Urza's Rage, with my opponent at 10 and I was at 3. Because the 2nd part does not say 'and' it will work as long as you have a spell to target (works on uncounterable spells)

There is now, Bump in the Night. But yeah, I get your point. Then there is This + Absorb back in Shards block in the form of Punish Ignorance. A fun, yet too color intensive, spell.

A truly great card, everything is so perfect: the effect, the cost, the art and the flavor text.

Now it's a Bump in the Night stapled to a counterspell!
