Right place at the right time. I don't know of a great many blue decks which still actually use this. But hey, it's still a good card (even if it's not an all-time great card) and there's no denying the impact it had or its importance in Magic history.

Pile 1: Force of Will. Pile 2: Everything else.

@styg I still use Fact or Fiction in every T1 that splashes blue. It's still an absolute powerhouse because it's an instant.

@oatusmcflee Exactly why guys like zage get the laughs and you just don't get the joke.

I dont think people understand WHY this card is so good.

in combo situations its drawing you 5 deep each and every time because you are always able to get the combo piece you need out of the 5.

a lot of the time you get even more than that.

the card is actually broken, it will never see reprint its just too good.

the card creates situations for your opponent where unless they play at a very high level they are blown out, which isn't fair when dealing with a single card.

also it doesnt reward skill on the casting player either.

make it 4 cards and a sorcery and it would see standard play.

Four cards. Instant. Library tutor. Sound familiar? It saw play in standard for awhile, yes.

Restricted in Type 1. Loathed by players everywhere.

There really are no two better accolades for a card.

Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction. An old show on FOX about five stories that you put into two groups--which were true and which were false. Coincidence?

I THINK NOT! >:D
Anyways, great card, always fun to run, powerful, makes people sweat. What better way of showing complete and utter disrespect in a multiplayer game than saying "hey, I think you're the guy to not know how to pile."

Use it in Secret Partners. Choose someone you think is your team mate for 5-0 piles!

I hate (when played against me) and love this card (when I play it). Essentially its a 5 card library filter with you, the caster, choosing what to keep. Even if its a 1/4 split you would definitely choose the one that suits you the most.

Not to mention its instant speed

Let's see:

1- CMC 4 - Just one blue mana. So you can splash it in every deck with blue.
2- Your opponent choose, so you can tell what he can deal with and what he cannot.
3- Type Instant - Anything else to say?

This card gets better with a bad opponent; in the WORST of the case, you are drawing the BEST card of the top five. In the BEST case, you draw FOUR cards.

Called "F$%*ed or F$%*ed" in my playgroup, because face it: those are pretty much your two options.

When the person playing this isn't running a broken deck that gives you no good choice for piles this card makes for a fun little side puzzle. Wonderful design.

This thing = BEAST in my classic pyromancer ascension deck.

Would you pay CMC 5 for a 7-card split, also?

A classic that forces your opponent to make a very difficult choice. Who doesn't love Fact or Fiction?

This is the hardest instant to 'play right', for roughly the same reasons that Doomsday is the hardest sorcery to 'play right.'

Certainly, it's one of those cards you never want to see in the hands of a genius across the table from you. There was a time when at least half of all Magic puzzles began with, "Fact or Fiction resolves, and these are your piles... how do you guarantee a win?"
