This feels like it should have been something Fangren, even the flavor text fits with Fangren Hunter more or less.

Big, common trampling creatures for the win.

Question: Why am I paying an extra {2} for my Garruk's Companion to get +0/+2?

@Test-Subject_217601 this survives a bolt, plus there is no Garruk in Scars limited, so where else are we going to get a green vanilla animal/insect creature with trample? well worth the 4 drop I say.

Nice in conjunction with Piston Sledge. 7/5 vanilla trample for total of 7 mana is nothing to scoff at in limited.

"No, hunters. You are the mantises."

How could this be rated so low? I've always thought a 3/3 for three on its own was playable...

The flavor is very appropriate because it's a Mantis.
The Preying Mantis is widely known and generally, the only mantis people can name.
This card takes that name to the extreme with these monstrous hunters. Fangrens are just angry creatures that enjoy ripping up artifacts.
Artifacts and elves.

This isn't the coolest Insect with trample in the game (Giant Solifuge is). Was surprised to search and see there's actually enough Insects with trample to make a deck consisting of nothing but trampling insects, maybe throwing in Deadly Insect or Gigapede.

Having trouble accepting that this doesn't have reach (i.e., isn't Cloudcrown Oak).

And then the hunters were grasshoppers.

I love this card, especially where it is in the Mirrodin block because it makes an excellent base to add artifacts to, it's powerful enough to take some hits while you wait for artifacts and with trample, it soon becomes unstoppable. If it weren't for the 4 CMC drop, I would be happy using a deck with these and artifacts exclusively.

Fantastic in limited, could work in budget constructed.
