The card that immediately jumps to mind when I see this card is Rest For The Weary. RFTW is normally better, because it gains you one more life, and doesn't require green mana. The place where this card would be better though, is at the end of an opponents turn. If you have extra mana to spend this card gives you three more life if you didn't play a land that turn. The only reason you really would play a land during an opponents turn is if you had a landfall deck, or if you were using Terramorphic Expanse/Evolving Wilds.
In most life gain decks the extra life is better (especially if you play: turn one: Serra Ascendant turn two: Rest For The Weary) but they both are good, cheap ways to gain a substantial amount of life.

My favorite art of Gerrard ever. He looks so buff and epic here.

Simply not true. While life gain can sometimes be delaying the inevitable, there are many, many cards that can use lifegaining as an advantage. Ajani Goldmane, Ajani's Pridemate, Ageless Entity, Felidar Sovereign and Serra Ascendant all come to mind, but those are only a few. Before you comment on how these cards are terrible, consider all the facts, alright?

A spell that does literally nothing but gain life should never appear at a higher rarity than common.
Seriously, it would have to be like "gain 18 life."

actually, Evisceration is, while not quite right, close.
Lifegain with literally nothing else, isn't that great.
Lifegain attached as an etb ability to a creature or a rider on a noncreature spell is usually ok.
Life-LINK is actually fantastic.
Felidar Sovereign is example of a creature with a big body, lifelink, and PS it can win you the game on the spot. That's a far and away different kind of card entirely than Heroes' Reunion.
