A colorless Hill Giant with an inefficient shade pump. I can't decide if I like it...

i think it'll be good in drafts at least

One thing about Scars drafts is that there was never any good, descent sized artifact critter. You either have the miniature replicas for cheap, the sometimes-good/sometimes-do-nothing metal craft ones and the ridiculously overcosted razorfield thresher. All that I wanted was an always reliable 3/3 for 4. So I will be using this guy now, even if I'm not in black.

I think they forgot to give him infect.

This should have infect...as is it's too costly. Meh

This card is just okay, but the pump-up cost is WAY too high. What's interesting is that not long ago (only a few sets back), this would've been considered a fairly well-costed card if the pump-up ability wasn't so overcosted. Oh, how things change...

Decent late pick in a draft. Compare it with Hill Giant. Not every card can be par with the curve, or there would be no curve.

"fail shade is fail powerleek."

Compared to what? A colorless hill Giant is a solid card in nearly every limited environment. Dross Ripper even has a small bonus on top of that. So where is this leek in power you're refering to?

Once again, people using terms "power creep" and "power leek" fail to acknowledge that cards are measured within the context of the environment they're put into. These terms are too simplistic to have any practical use whatsoever, and I really wish people would stop spouting them mindlessly in place of making a comment with some value.

@scu*mbling1: That's a far too sensible post for your correspondant, methinks.

Can you pay the "buff" cost multiple times?

Powerleek? Is that some sort of OP vegetable?

Combo difference between this and Hill Giant:
Dross Ripper doesn't get a boost from the Vanilla Enchantment.

Solid in limited, although the {2}{B} to pump is pretty hefty, in limited though a 3/3 for {4} is never a bad thing...furthermore the fact that it is an artifact can be both a blessing and a curse, it makes it more susceptible to removal while at the same time helps enable mechanices such as metalcraft and allows synergy with cards such as Throne of Geth

Colorless Hill Giant is fair at common.
The ability is just gravy.

For it's usefulness in either a mono-black, a B/G or a B/R (using either Green or Red for mana ramp) I definitely like this... But with a 3cmc for it's ability, it's painful to activate it's +1/+1... Compared to other cards that give +1/+1 in this way, for 1 Swamp and 2 Colourless, I'd expect something like a +2/+2 or a +2/+1. It doesn't look like something that would be used for defence. :/

Still, I honestly can't say I don't like this.... I'd just be very careful in how I use it. MBS and SOM are still my two favourite sets, with NPH a very close third, so I could most definitely find a good home for a couple Rippers if I got the chance. :)

There's nothing bad about this card. Nothing. The base creature is efficient and the ability is completely optional and is just an added bonus. A solid and viable common, good for limited but unworthy of you wallet warriors and your constructed formats.

It's a shame that a card with such amazing artwork turns out to be so mediocre. I have a foil of this which looks absolutely spectacular, but really doesn't do much but sit there and look cool. It really does feel like it ought to be an infect creature.

The Neurok should get a new strategist, because a 3/3 for 4 that trades 3 mana for +1/+1 for 1 turn is not going to exterminate anything.
