Love the card for the psychological warfare it can bring in late game :D

Very peculiar concept. Surely someone can squeeze a deadly combo out of such a strange mechanic? If you could get Protection from Red on yourself you could write an outlandishly high number and get the +2/+2 for free. Or even shunt the self-flaggelation onto someone else? I dunno.

@Gradiusthefox This doesn't target or cause damage so protection from red wont stop the life "loss".

I hate this card. I don't like having to stop the game to pass around little slips of paper just to execute some bizarre, worthless effect.

Flash in Menacing Ogre with Vedalken Orrery at the end of your turn if I have more life than you. Pay all but one of my life. Upkeep, sac Magus of the Mirror, swing for lethal.
Anyone have a good number to pick? How much is +2/+2 worth? Especially compared to cards like Elemental Appeal? Is "all but 1, when I have more life than you" really a valid strategy?

This guy already has the 2 abilities that make it work more in your favour: Trample and Haste
Since you only get 2 counters no matter the life paid, it be safe to put the number at 2, if your opponent bids a 1, your ogre is now a 5/5 that will hit for 5 damage immediately assuming no combat trickery.
If he bids 2 he loses 2 life and you still get a 5/5.
3 or higher just mean your ogre counters have been converted to life loss for your opponent
Good for casual decks

You have no idea how many games this has won me because other players end up NOT reading the entire card before selecting there number for keeps, I have KO's at least... 4 or 5 people because they pick a huge number and kill themselves XD

Used to have a Stonebrow, Krosan Hero EDH deck just for giggles and I knew I wanted to have this guy in there. I had him forever, but could never put him in a deck, but EDH is the place were these types of cards shine. Haste and trample are already huge in an aggressive commander deck, and its silly seeing how many people will just neglect to read the entire card and pay an absurd amount of life (thinking it'll counter the ability somehow) and still get punched in the nuts. Menacing Ogre is a hysterical card.
