tapping really doesn't feel right to me in black. This is... just awkward. Set up a royal assassin kill?

For just Black, it stops potential attackers in their tracks, and outright kills anything with 1 toughness. (red and white have quite a few)
Definitely better than it looks.

Horrible card. Hate hate hate it. The two effects are NEVER relevant at the same time. If the -1/-1 matters, it's either already in combat/postcombat and tapping is useless, or it's dead and tapping is useless. If the tapping matters, it's not attacking or blocking and it's obviously not dead, so the -1/-1 is useless. HORRIBLE. Can we have Afflict back please?

I like Disfigure better. I have an idea: Why not mix the two. Then we would have: Disfiguring Pain, Instant, BB, Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn. Tap that creature.

Black tapping. I remember that from Planar Chaos.

@Mutanman: Why on earth are you expectations so high for a 1 mana cost card? This is a great UTILITY card. Utility stuff usually provides you with options, none of which are game breaking but can spell bad news for something if you use it right.

I've actually won games of limited because I ended up with 2 in my maindeck. I used one to save a creature while killing my opponents, and then next turn I tutored the second with Diabolic Tutor and tapped my opponents only blocker, which allowed me to swing for lethal damage. It's an all-round good card in limited.

This and Diminish will kill an indestructible creature.

I love this card, or rather, I love cards with multiple uses. Sure the taping effect has nothing to do with the -1/-1 but that is the point. It can be used for different situations. Fantastic card for limited with combat tricks and when you just need one more turn without the big creature attacking.

The hate for this card is a bit confusing considering how popular Twiddle used to be. It's a good instant that will kill weak creatures outright and get tougher ones out of your way.

In some decks, it can be extremely useful. I'm starting to build a Infect deck based around Livewire Lash, and this functions as delay, removal, or in a pinch, a way to deal those last two poison counters.

I can see why some people dislike the seemingly contradictory effects, but may I remind you of vigilance? If you're being swung at by a Sun Titan(and forgot to use this before combat), you can use this to take less damage, and tap it down for a free swing next turn.

Not only does it protect against Annihilator by tapping their eldrazi, but it also does a little damage allowing you to exile or destroy based on damage dealt this turn.

A flesh-warper? That's one f*cked up profession. I better keep my internal organs away from such sickos.

Try Midnight Charm instead.

It isn't a bad card but it also isn't a strong card. I feel like the two sides are using too much hyperbole here.

In limited and casual it gets various jobs done. There are other cards that do all of those jobs better.

Royal Assassin and this, my friend was smirking with his vigilance cards when I put Royal Assassin out, I had the last laugh with this card

Tiny disfigure with the added possibility of holding off a big attacker, or locking down a single blocker long enough to get your damage through.
It's decent, not more, not less.

To all the people extolling the many uses of this card: it sounds like you're searching really hard to find a situation where you encounter blind luck for this card to do something worthwhile.

"Please tell me you get this now."

That's ironic.

The card doesn't place a -1/-1 counter on anything. Your arguments for the card's value are based on an incorrect understanding of what it does!

this is a multi-use spell that can be included in a deck to be use for MORE THAN ONE situation. need to bring something down to Bolt range? done. need to buy some time? also done. this allows some flexibility. it's not a great card, sure, but it's hardly "terrible"

This looks a lot more painful than the injury in Stab Wound.

Can be removal, and when its not it still does something. Passable for 1 mana.
