Poor little fella. That was probably his mother.

Those Mercadian are a sick bunch of bastards...

TO ARMS, FELLOW REBELS! FOR THE PUFFERS!

I was always tempted to use it with creature-theft... like Overtaker, for instance.

Puffer fish venom is not a stimulant, but a depressant neurotoxin so powerful that a drop can send someone into a coma if it does not kill them. Science FAIL!

Science fail. In the world of MAGIC. These could be genetically altered puffers, who also blow bubbles and enjoy Saturday morning cartoon shows in addition to giving random folks fun bonuses.

The true science fail is thinking that this is a science fail.

Is the casting cost of this explained by Masques' over-correction of Urza's block hyper-power?

Quite good with indestructible creatures

It's not that bad for Commander I think. The commander damage rule is very relevant there (if you are dealt 21 or more damage from a single commander, you lose), so the puffer extract can be a big help in getting there.
It also can be used on indestructible or regenerating creatures without much of a drawback. Or you can tap it just for 0 mana, to kill creatures an opponent would want to steal from you, or that you stole for a turn, or to trigger "whenever this/a creature dies" abilities. Or when your commander is unable to do something because of an aura or whatever, you can use this to kill him and replay him. And so on.

Maybe overcosted by today's standards, but not a useless card. Playable in token decks, swing with you army then enrage the one that gets through. Or just use it as an all or nothing finisher.

@Paleopaladin: No, this is a daring improvement over the Ice Age's broken Celestial Sword!

I've enjoyed this with Greater Good in casual cube draft.

This looks like it'd give a late game Spark Elemental a reason to exist. Assuming you only have the five lands you needed to cast the Puffer Extract, then you can cast the elemental and give it +4/+4, making it a 7/5 hasted trampler that was going to die at end of turn anyway.

TopRomen had a good start, but there's more subtle trolling to frommerman's comment. Puffers are toxic, a venom has to be injected with a fang, claw, or spine. Also, the type of puffer in the art isn't the same as the japanese Fugu, which is known for its poison. Finally, tetrodotoxin is used in Haitian Vodou for making zombies. And we all know how powerful zombies are.

Here's an idea: reprint this, but make it cost 2 less to cast, not kill the creature, and change the flavor.
