it could be much more interesting, though: if it was a one-drop, one could play a creature on the second turn to profit from the ability already, not later. like this you'll have spent , played a smaller creature and are still left with card disadvantage. it's unfortunately also restricted to spells and won't trigger for creatures put onto the battlefield - which excludes all sorts of tokens, and also won't work when unearthing them (both regarding the card itself and the activated ability)- ... the flavor text is a good one, though.

Like a great deal of the Masques block, full of flavor but not particularly useful.
Might not be so bad in a reanimate deck or something else where strategic discard might be beneficial. Also, could help charge up Archmage Ascension, possibly with flash creatures to play on someone else's turn to speed that along.
