Umm, DaaNz has no idea what he is talking about. There are a billion decks that use graveyard fodder for power, Death Soil eats zombies and gives you creatures! At a cost of only 1C per activation, this is a pretty good card, particularly after something like a Wrath of God obliterates a bunch of creatures.

Looks like a muddy Dan-Dan. Great card though!

I believe Daanz is providing an insightful critique of not the mechanics but the art.

This is the version I have somewhere. This is my favorite variation of the flavor text, but I think it also has the worst art in MTG history. Just because a card has "soil" in the name doesn't mean you should only draw dirt, Drew Tucker. The version with the rake is much cooler: even though the saproling in that one is a green turd with arms, it beats dirt and an indistinguishable blur that might be a root or something.

The card itself is too slow to use in its original purpose, a saproling deck, where creatures in your graveyard is generally the result of you getting set back, and your opponent may or may not be using a lot of creatures. Back in Fallen Empires, there weren't that many saproling cards, but today there's too many better choices to put in a saproling deck to need this.

Not bad for any deck with green that's running a lot of disposable creatures though.

Well, it does provide a way to eat opposing graveyards, which can be handy in Commander.

Top 5 card from FE. Grinding your opponents graveyard for 1/1s for 1 is too efficient to be ignored. 5/5

The art really leaves something to be desired.

Decipherability, for one.

1 mana is amazing. Two cards is nothing and you can do it to any graveyard, at instant speed. Deals with nasty threats like dredge or flashback or unearth or reanimators. The 1/1s will add up and provide nice recovery to board wipes. This thing is main deck material 4.5/5

How dare you Drew Tucker? I mean this is actually a playable card in some situations. Not like an Icatian Moneychanger.

This art is lovely, actually. Filthy, fungal, dirt ambient. I like the style.

@Kirbster: Given that Nightsoil was a term for overnight chamber pot leavings, it is better for the art to be less realistic in this case.
