I love that they have first strike because they're narwhals.

Gotta love a card that is a Narwhal, and also has a quote by a sea troll, one of the worst creatures ever. Fun fact: this card is on the reserve list, meaning it will never be reprinted, along with such esteemed cards as the power nine.

White Knight and Black Knight were printed in Alpha and this costs a full 2 colorless more. What the hell, R&D?

Another form of Black Knight or White Knight, but costing 2 more since it is Homelands, where good ideas go to die.

I don't think I can NOT rate this 5/5 for being a narwhal. But, the basic breakdown:
-Cost: 2UU means that this might come out a little late but it could be worse. +0
-Body: A 2/2 for 4... well, blue tends to suck at creatures. +0.5
-Abilities: Pro-Red is not that common in straight blue, and first strike is even less so. This may be the justifier for it being so expensive, since blue is so far off color it hurts. In fact, FS is a primarily white and red ability! Cute... +2.5
-Others: NARWHAL! +2 (...but seriously, nothing special. +0)

In short, NARWHAL! 5/5 (A good novelty card; 3/5)

I'm seeing "Knight" comparisons, but how much would you be willing to pay for a green Counter spell? First strike has never been easy to find on blue cards, so if you had a way to field it without using another color or a second card, your normally willing to pay a little extra. Not to mention red protection on creatures is perhaps the most important (renders most direct damage, first strikers, and double strikers useless against him).

4/5. Originally 3.5/5, but added half a star because of the great flavor of this card. One of the few casualties of the color pie.

Braid_of_Fire's Card of the Day #8

I'm mixed on this card.

I think that it's important to give blue creatures like this that represent its element of choice (water certainly is more important to blue than air), but at the same time, this card is called "Narwhal". It doesn't evoke an image of a battle between planeswalkers, and it's not as though a mage in battle would think "I want to attack this guy with some narwhals. Not any specific ones, just the animal." The flavor text is fairly general too, with a Sea Troll discussing the uses of their horns. It might as well be a token, if not for the fact that it has two off-color effects that would never be seen on a blue token.

So yes, a blue card could get protection from red, but that's really white's game. So is first strike, and in a big way.

My vote for this card brought it below 4.0, which says to me that a lot of Magic players like Giant Shark and its ilk. I am fond of them too, though without the awful ability "Island-Home" they don't make much sense. It's kind of like how in Pokemon, the Cerulian Gym battles took place in a pool, because that's basically what's required here for this fight to make any sense.

Why do Narwhals get first strike anyways? Or Pro-Red for that matter? Do Narwhals have some sort of transcendence of all things chaotic and passionate? Is the emulation of mountains something they scoff at? I don't know narwhals to be such sort of creatures, but if they were specific narwhals who were exceptionally fast with their horns and detested any illogical thought, then sure, they could have these abilities, but they're not Narwhal Knights, they're just narwhal. The lack of cohesion between the singular name of the card and the picture presented there upon is striking, but expected of Homelands.

This card is just awkward.

In a perfect world, Narwhals would be a relevant tribe.

Is card is so out of modern flavor for blue, which makes it so good.
