It's cheap but it doesn;t really do much, does it?

depends what you are facing, for example, a palace guard, blocking a bunch of green tramplers, actually survives blocking them and saves you from being stomped on

Green doesn't have much that targets creatures directly, but Green Ward can protect your best creature from Desert Twister, or prevent your Mesa Pegasus from dying to Hurricane. Unlike some of the other Wards, Green Ward is probably best used on a creature with banding, as most of green's threats come in the form of creatures. Unfortunately, protection from green does nothing to prevent you from being stomped by tramplers. In Dingo's example above, a Palace Guard blocking a bunch of green tramplers would only prevent you from taking 4 damage. Any damage beyond lethal damage would be assigned to you.

@Eppek_the_Goblin: That's not true. When some creature has protection from color all damage from that color is prevented.

702.14e Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or
player with protection is prevented.

Doesn't make this card good though.

I don't get why they added the "protection granted does not destroy this card" line to the non-white wards. Did they really feel it was necessary to nerf Lifelace?
