Card is not befitting it's impressive-looking art (9th & 10th ed).

This card is still decent.

As far as blue hitters are concerned it's a classic.

I was going to rate this a 4, and I then I realized this is pretty darn good for a blue, so I give it a solid 4.5. Although Nowadays we have the sphinx of jwar isle which costs the same, and blows this guy out of the water. Still a solid creature though for blue and it's been around since the beginning. Definitely have a different level of respect for the classics.

i'm not sure the sphinx of jwar isle blows this out of the water. the sphinx has shroud, which is a neutral ability, and lets you look at top card of library, but has 1 less toughness. still good.

One thing he will always have above Sphinx of Jwar Isle is the ability to swat Baneslayer Angel out of the sky. Beyond that though I would prefer the sphinx. My point is that this guy still has his uses.

This thing beats baneslayer angel. It's nothing special in terms of power, but it is a classic. I like how it beats BSA, but it gets as close to possible to not. I mean really, one less point of toughness or power and BSA would pwn this thing all day.

I like how this guy's been around since the beginning of the game and was the best 6-drop (compared to stuff like Craw Wurm) in a color that was supposed to have the weakest creatures. I also think it's hilarious that he costs the same as Sea Serpent and was printed in the same early sets.

Mahamoti Djinn hasn't gotten any better. Thanks to the enormous support for dragons, angels, and demons in this game, we now have removal that nobody really suspects: Plummet. Honestly, this guy was an oldschool beatstick, but the format is just too full of ready removal.
I hate to be the guy who says "Dies to doom blade," but a creature has to be able to do more than absorb 6 damage than to be a playable flier in my book. I'm much more willing to run creatures like Steel Hellkite because he's not handicapped. He's handicapable. He earns the slough of removal that can kick his shiny metal @$$.
Edit: I've changed my mind about this card. It's not perfect, but at least it still compares with cards like Consecrated Sphinx, which thankfully has a lower power than this, otherwise it would be *completely* outmoded.

Well, now for one more mana blue has a 8/7 flyer! It's about time.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I like Mahamoti's flavor text. I appreciate that they kept it while giving the card some fresh art.

Anyone who says this is worth less than 4/5, you have no idea how hard blue had it in the creature department (See Sea Serpent and Vizzerdrix)
Every tournament deck running blue usually had just 4 of these beat sticks to end games or use as a staller for the player to get out combos. 6 toughness was actually more than sufficient to deter many creatures and 5 power is nothing to scoff at
People must be getting spoiled, Sphinx of Jwar Isle is not always 10/10 times better: - 1 less toughness (Baneslayer can kill Sphinx - allows looking at the top card of your library (not very useful unless you use clash or some other card that uses similar mechanics) - Shroud can work against the owner unlike Hexproof
I would say the sphinx is 5/10 times better if you actually use the 2nd ability for something useful
4/5 for longest serving Djinn

It's not quite strong enough by today's standards to *really* be what you'd want as your pack rare- but I think there'd be a lot of people WoTC could make happy if they made a 'strictly better' updated guy in some Core Set of the Future:
Samuel Mahamoti Jackson {4}{U}{U} Legendary Creature-Black Djinn (Rare) Flying, protection from Red {T}: Draw a card for each Mountain target player controls. 5/6
"I am MAHAMOTI tired of these MAHAMOTI angels on this MAHAMOTI plane!"- Samuel Mahamoti Jackson.

I think the coolest thing would be if the new art depicted the same creature or being, but doing something different or seen from a different angle. Then we'd have a fresh feel while keeping the familiarity. I mean, we know already what a Mahamoti Djinn actually looks like from the previous artwork. Maybe we could just have the same guy, but show him actually floating over a bunch of gamblers or something similar.

Sphinx of Jwar Isle? Sure, that card is arguably better than this in many situations, but this beast is only surpassed by Sphinx of the Chimes.
More importantly though, is that anyone obsessing over the Mahamoti's "weaknesses" clearly don't understand the big picture here. This guy was the blue beatstick of his time. Blue has always been one of the least aggressive color, and it hasn't changed all too much as of now.

Apparently was pretty bitchin' back in the day... now it just looks plain boring and unimpressive.
