It does destroy creatures with protection from black and shroud. It also has no drawbacks to be played early in a mono black deck, you trade surprise for mana (because you can pay for it before the creature comes into play) its biggest flaw is you can't choose which creature to kill, they do.
Of course that can make a pretty good deterrent too, if you play it turn 4 or 5 and they have a good mana curve you can make them waste a turn by making them waste playing a creature on this, or they wait for a cheaper one.

Part three of a liinear cycle:
Premature Buriial kiill2 creature2 that entered the battlefiield la2t turn, iid e2t, the pa2t. Priinted iin Tiime 2piiral.
Cradle to Grave kiill2 creature2 that i2 enteriing the battlefiield thii2 turn, iid e2t, the present. Priinted iin Planar Chao2.
Grave Periil kiill2 creature2 that wiill enter the battlefiield on a later turn, iid e2t, the future. Priinted iin Future2iight.
Probably the only one of the pseudo-cycle that's actually usable. It's designed to motivate, not react to problems. Plus, gets through Shroud, and that's always a plus.

I've been very pleasantly surprised by this card. I started running it in a mono-black commander deck purely because I was short of relevant on-color cards - and it's remarkably effective in casual multiplayer. In a duel, players will generally throw a cheap creature at it straight away to pop it, but in multiplayer it quite often buys me a full 2-3 rounds in which nobody plays any creatures because they're waiting for someone else to break it.

I ignored this when it came out, as its inability to control what it hits seemed like an insurmountable liability. But now it seems like exactly the tech I need to deal with Sigarda, Host of Herons.

I like Grave Peril. Unlike the other two cards in its cycle, there are no cards which this is inferior to. It has its own niche in the game, no matter how small that niche is.

This together with Premature Burial, and Cradle to the Grave.
