Basalt Monolith is a good mana accelerator. A turn 3 Monolith means you'll be able to play six or seven mana spells on the fourth turn. A fourth turn Lord of the Pit, Craw Wurm, or Island Fish Jasconius was nothing to sneeze at. The drawback was that it was only good once, and then you had to pay to untap it. This meant that if you wanted to play multiple big spells, you'd have to wait until every other turn to do so. This is very bad for tempo.
I was told at a tournament 13 years ago that you can't use Basalt Monolith mana to untap Basalt Monolith. I see no such clarification here... was that ruling faked?

There used to be a ruling that you cannot use the Basalt's mana to untap itself, but it was lifted. I suggest using Power Artifact or any of its ilk.
