The haste ability is whats really key here, not just the land destruction. Thats not to say that the land destruction is bad, its amazing. But without the haste all your doing is paying four mana to destroy one land, eight mana in total if you want to keep the riders in play. By adding haste you gain the oppertunity to destroy a land and attck the opponent for two; increasing your offensive strategy.

Yep. When I look at most of the other land-destruction cards out there (did anyone EVER play with Flowstone Flood?), I'm always amazed at just how good the Riders really are. I guess it's pretty obvious this one was designed by an Invitational winner.

This card reminds me of my great luck in opening packs during the Time Spiral block. I only got five backs, one from Time Spiral, three from Planar Chaos, and one from Future Sight. In my one TS pack, I got a foil Avalanche Riders; all of my Planar Chaos packs had two rares; and in my one FS pack was a Tarmogoyf.

Red/Blue bounces these guys, Red/Black just lets it die to echo then recurs it. If you see this drop, count on them coming back for more of your land.

Combos really well with Stalking Vengeance to deal 2 damage when it dies and Fling-like effects to deal an additional 2 damage. From there, you can use cards like Gravedigger to get him back.

Alternatively, you could always bounce him back with something like Unsummon.
