Someone once told me that this card wasn't actually inspired by former Magic Art Director Jeremy Cranford, but that's pretty hard to believe when his name is explicitly included in the flavor text.

A little bit of story behind the card:

Art Director Jeremy Cranford received a TON of fan outrage when he decided to stop commissioning Rebecca Guay to do artwork, because apparently her art didnt fit into his vision for MTG. A lot of the outburst was over her being "fired". WOTC, in additional to clarifying their stance (she wasnt fired, they just stopped commissioning her), they paid her to do an unhinged card:
