wait, why the heck did they change it from loss of life prevention to damage prevention? isnt it just better preventing loss overall than strictly damage? damage counts as life loss, right?

Why does the oracle text say you have to tap it? Was it an inherent part of artifact activation from back in the days when a tapped artifact didn't function? Or is it just a typo?

The type "Mono Artifact" meant you had to tap the artifact, in addition to any other mentioned costs, to get the effect.

All the life loss I've seen explicitly states that it cannot be prevented or redirected, so letting this prevent life loss would be a moot point, since no life loss can be prevented in the first place.

It's not that bad: Animate Artifact it, block opponent's Craw Wurm, then sac it to Orcish Mechanics (since the current Oracle wording of that card allows you to).
