What I don't really understand is why it isn't four toughness before it dies, but it is afterward. I understand that Sprouting Thrinax is very strong even in three colors and that they can't make 1/0.25 tokens, but it still seems off somehow.

Makes me really want some creature cards that represent multiple creatures without tokens, something similar to the old phantom creatures. I.E. a 0/0 with 3 +1/+1 counters with "whenever this would be destroyed, instead remove a +1/+1 counter from it. When it has no +1/+1 counters on it, sacrifice it."
Still, nice and flavorful. Quite like that it's a pack.

@ blurrymadness The closest thing I can think of for that is something like Thopter Squadron, though that uses tokens as well as counters.
