The Birds have been one of the staples of the game since it began, but they were created as an afterthought. Their art was originally supposed to be for Tropical Island, but the bird was too prominent. So Richard Garfield created a card just for the art, and it ended up being the most versatile mana-producing creature ever.
--Also the creature type was 'Mana Birds', modern versions are just 'Bird'

This was the absolute best mana producer magic had ever created (creature based, mind you) until Noble Hierarch was printed, which then pushed this into, equal first, Noble is not strictly better, and neither is birds. Exalted is very powerful, but so is flying....

@ Sk8er_Boi_1999 you mark this as .5 out of 5 because it only has 1 toughness and would die to most removal? .5 for a creature that produces any color mana for just and only costs ...

You do know 99% of all other cards are just as easily removed... but 99% of other cards can't do what Birds of Awesome do...

Don't play a land, it will only be Sinkholed.
No enchantments, Demystify is just around the corner.
Don't use Sensei's Divining Top they may have Shatter.
Don't play any spell. They will just use Counterspell.
Oh you have Terra Stomper, that will work! Control Magic what? NOOOOOOO!!!!!!
