I've been building a phoenix deck in the back of my mind for years. This aura and shivan phoenix create some serious board position. The only question is, do i go red/black for the shadow, or red/white for the scales?
I'll probably never build this deck but it looks like it might be fun.

Great card. - it's cheap so can be played early on - makes late game still sense, since you can pump all excess mana into the firebreathing effect - returns to play for free - gives your fatties what they need most (next to trample): haste
Also great in team games, where you can play it (or return it) on a teammates creature. And then you can spend your mana on firebreathing up your teammates creature.

Easily the best card of the dragon aura cycle (which would be breath, fangs, scales, shadow, wings.)
Even without the firebreathing it would still be awesome, since giving haste to your big guy without spending mana alone is already a great thing.
Since you have to get this card in your graveyard somehow (if you don't want to simply cast it on another creature first and wait for it to die) consider using good old Anger instead when running mono-red, or a deck that can add mountains without problems.

The Dragon aura cycle is secretly amazing in reanimator decks. I put Dragon Scales on the Pelakka Wurm I recur with Unburial Rites -- and the enchantment is free because I discarded both to Faithless Looting.

The best way to give a creature haste is for 0 extra mana. Easily the best of the cycle and the firebreathing pushes it way over the top.
