This should have been red. That way it could be useful in mirror matches back in the day. Blue really didn't want to drop mana into X spells, and it's obviously waaay off color.

The first thing people think when they look at this card is "WHY IS THIS BLUE." but get past that, and it looks like a really, really powerful card to me

Would definitely make way more sense as a card. Blow mountains up, hurt your opponent! This was from a time when each color had to have dedicated enemy-color hosers.

I think it's blue because blue can also be attributed to an island. And some islands are volcanic. But that's a bit of a stretch. Yeah, *** it, this should have been red.
