This was once the most wanted of cards...however we see it now as a relatively useless card...

This was a better card when creatures cost more. Now, there's much cheaper ways to make token creatures.

10 mana just for ONE 1/1 wasp. . . . yeah now Giant Slug is looking good compared to this. . . .

Got to give it points for flavor though. I love the fact that this printing actually explains all the rules for using tokens on the card. 5/5 for nostalgia, 0.5/5 for actual utility.

Why does the oracle text require a tap, and the actual card doesn't? Ive noticed that with alot of the older cards...
This card is pretty bad nowadays, compare to things like Ant Queen. I do agree with Faildini about the flavor though. And I really like the card name.

This is a Mono artifact meaning it could only be used once, which is why the oracle text requires a tap.

"If the Hive is destroyed, the Wasps must still be killed individually."

Rather unintuitive given by upbringing on 80s Sci-Fi/Horrors.

Worst token generator EVER.

That's because this is a 'Mono Artifact' (Look at it's type line). 'Mono' was an old subtype of artifact that inherently required a Tap to use it's ability, so it only had one use per turn (hence the 'Mono'.) Sort of like how the land subtype 'Forest' inherently adds "Tap: Add Green to your mana pool." to what ever land it's on.

The alternative was 'Poly Artifact' that did not need the Tap and so could be activated multiple times a turn. Pyramids being one of these. And other was 'Continuous Artifact' that needed no activation, but had static or triggered abilities, like Enchantments. One you should be familiar with is Howling Mine, which only recently left Standard. The line on the Mine about only if is untapped on the more recent versions is also something that was part of the Continuous line of artifacts, in that they lost their effect when tapped.

To all the people hating on this card as a crappy token generator: You are completely missing the point. This card was the FIRST token generator. All artifacts had inflated casting costs at this time, since there was tons of color hate spells and wotc thought that being able to put something into any deck was a big premium to its value. And in addition, evasion abilities like flying could frequently be game enders. For its time, this card was something to be feared.

@ land_comment - if you think 8 lines of text are bad, take a gander at Ice Cauldron.

@ John-Bender - learn how to count.

"Kidz" these days have no respect for anything that was created before Facebook.
