This is an interesting wizard. In a deck without black, he is almost strictly worse than a Merfolk Looter, since he costs 1 more, and since you have to discard before you see what you're drawing.
If you're using the second ability, though, he's helping you dig pretty quickly for a 3-mana creature, and he doesn't look quite as bad.
Naturally, as a flavour geek, the card appeals to me. This is one of the first cards I saw that explicitly encouraged playing two colours together, and his powers become more impressive if he dabbles in "the black arts". I have to give him a thumbs up, even though these days he looks very outclassed.
