I actually like this card. Rounding out it's P/T makes it a 3/4 with a cmc of 4, which for black is fairly good. As it is, it makes an easily splashable, good blocker that can also absorb damage when attacking. And I love the art/flavor behind it.

Oh, the Theriad. It turns out "The Champion" isn't just one person but a title. See the Ajani, Mentor of Heroes Uncharted Realms article. From the fact that this Champion has an "old crew" I assume it's not Elspeth.
Interesting that Heliod's chosen are all women. I think his Zeus is showing...

Why is a rotted hulk an elemental?

Black has gotten better at this since Catacomb Slug!

@ DaLucaray - I figured that the 'her' it was referring to was the ship itself... cos ships seem to always be referred to as female...
I could be wrong?

@DarthAndrew19905 I agree. This is very good rate for black, especially since black tends to be controilly in Theros You can sit back behind this and attack with your bloodcrazed hoplites, gnarled Scarhide etc.

Why do they waste such good art on such a vanilla common? :(
I don't know about you guys, but if a format staple had this art, I wouldn't mind.

@SAUS3 the art is 'wasted' for the same reason that all magic art is 'wasted': to make you look at the card; and this one is a pretty good example. vanilla, toughness-heavy creatures are easy to pass up, especially in black, but it's not a bad deal for B3, and if you're planning on a sengir or another notorious black 5 cmc attacker the next turn, it's nice to have something bottom-heavy around to block @Pendulous wood elementals are green elemental creatures made of wood, yes? take that wood, turn it into a ship, (against its will), let that ship sink into the ocean, let that wood brood a bit, and voila: one rotted hulk! (no longer green)
