Interesting ability. Obviously anything that can help someone who isn't you is great in multiplayer. Repeatable spell copying, especially for just 2U, is really good.

If you have a fair few instants and sorceries in limited, don't skip over this guy immediately. Even if you happen to not draw anything, he's at worst a 2/3 for 3. I've seen Elite Arcanist be put to good use in Limited and he's a 1/1 for 4. Give this guy a shot.

This ability could be abused with Hive Mind, and especially funny with the Pacts.

Meletis Charlatan? More like Meletis Gentleman! He also lets other players copy their spells.

Am I the only one who thinks this guy looks straight out of a Disney movie? Fantastic and fun, but the art just strikes me as...cartoony in terms of design. It doesn't look like Phil Foglio art or anything, but the design rather than the style just looks very Disney.

I'd get this just for the art

Less impressive than Elite Arcanist, but more practical, as he's cheaper and can actually handle himself well in a fight, and even more flexible.

You can use this on your opponent's spells if you need to in order to tap him and make him resistant to lure effects that would otherwise kill him.
Ok so I pulled one of these. And I can see how in a gang up maneuver, you can use this Disney-ish character, to help your buddy wreak havoc, or if you have the extra mana, use it yourself to copy a spell. I'm seeing some interesting mechanics of this set, and this is one of the odd "gems" for sure.

Added this to my Phelddagrif EDH - an awesome barter tool for Phelddagrif IMO.
@Ruaranicus: nope I don't think so - not for damage. You could probably run a match out of time by taking a really long turn ricocheting the ricochet over and over?

The guys facial expression i priceless. It's like he's a street vendor or a magician, trying to see if there's an interest in what he's offering. Interestingly, a Charlatan is another word for a swindler.

This + Commune with the Gods made a pretty awesome combination in limited. Searching the top ten cards of your library for two cards you want is pretty great. I pulled this off once and the two cards that I fetched were Benthic Giant and Nyxborn Triton. I already had Nylea's Emissary in my hand and a 9/11 hexproof trampler ended up winning the game.

@ThisisSakon: I don't think that works. If he uses the 2nd Pact to target the same spell as the first, it will resolve first and counter the target, and the first Pact wouldn't have a target anymore and then be countered. This spell does work with the other Pacts though.

Checking why he'd be a "charlatan"...Turns out the word comes from Middle French and Italian. It came from "cerretano", a native of the Umbrian village of Cerreto, apparently stocked to the gills with quack doctors and other claimants to knowledge they didn't actually have. So I think the idea is that the charlatan is passing off exact duplicates of the spells as more perfect, more Platonic-idealistic versions of the original spells. In other words, he's claiming to have as much knowledge of the Æther as Meletis's best philosophers--and making Ephara roll her eyes in the process (and probably Kruphix as well).
