Some of the coolest art on the set and one of the more under-rated cards in the set, IMO.

Tymaret, the Murder King and this gives me hope for some kind of grixis zombie deck later in the block.

Oooh, that flavor text could not be cooler. The Returned have a lot going for them in terms of fluff, but that is haunting.

By a long shot The Returned are my favorite race in Theros. I like their designs, their backstory, the masks, everything... except their cards Dx though this one seems sweet in limited. Blocks pig tokens all day every day.

3/3 defender for 1Black isn't too shabby, and at least it has the potential too attack.

Say what you will, it's one hell of a wall.

a 3/3 for 1+B is pretty good, added to the fact that it "could" have tons of zombie support later in the set just makes it an great small creature to get u rollin

Too few spears in the illustration to be considered a phalanx, methinks.

Maybe in control decks...?

Would have liked it more if it had been {1}{U}{U}: CARDNAME loses defender. Period. I DO like having creatures with defender and high stats. I LIKE having to pay costs and 'break seals' to get rid of defender. I don't like having to pay those costs repeatedly though. :/

If MBC devotion decks start cropping up, this and child of night well keep them alive against aggro.

My only regret with the art is that they didn't make it a continuous panorama with itself.

Good point about the "breaking seals" thing. Players probably like it better for limited this way though, paying BlueBlue there is often a problem, and being able to cast something else while still having two mana for its ability is pretty nicely managable as well. That's the impression I got from playing against Returned Phalanx at least; it caused me quite some trouble.

Not much into zombies, but Theros zombies look cool with their golden emotionless masks.

This card plus Whip of Erebos make me want to play UB control in current Standard. I have always had a soft spot for walls since Tempest block's 0/5 Wall of Diffusion and 4/1 first strike Wall of Razors, both for 1R. I would pay 3 cvm for Returned Phalanx.

Huh, so Death Eaters are a type now, huh?

It's basically a 1B for a 3/3 with a drawback. 5/5 common

Losing defender should be a red ability.

I've actually been running these guys in Dimir constructed for a little while and man, these guys eat aggro for breakfast.
I mean, Yoked Ox at 4 toughness for 1 mana is cool and all, but 3 power on a 2 drop can seriously relieve a lot of pressure during your early game.

Man.. commons lately have been more constructed-playable than ever before, and I'm loving it; not to mention 5 stars for Theros flavor alone, the Returned are freakin SWEET!

GREAT in limited. This thing is a staple of my deck every time I draft black/blue (which is almost every time I draft)
