If you think about it in terms of what each colour is bringing to the table, red's bringing the artifact destruction and black's bringing card advantage. Or, as magiclampoon would have it, 'black can destroy artifacts because black will do anything to win' ;)

I'd probably rather just not run artifacts and run Shatterstorm, but this card is wonderfully flavorful.

I do prefer a good meltdown myself. This has the ability to continue to shut down artifacts in upcoming turns, but there's a window of time in which it can be dealt with, and in which those artifacts can be used to smack you around for a bit.
Energy Flux, now there's an artifact hoser.
