Shouldn't have to sacrifice this, it would be good

It's 4 mana for either destroying a creature or dealing 5 damage to an opponent. Because the opponent has to sacrifice a creature and doesn't target anything, it gets around protection, shroud, invulnerability, damage prevention, and so forth. If they don't sac a creature, then they take 5 unpreventable damage (unless they play an instant or have something that prevents them from losing life). It's a pretty decent card.

Target player loses 5 life.

Would you play it? Because that's what it is at best.

Underpowered.

It's like playing a slightly discounted Lava Axe that gives them choices and can be naturalized. It's a rare.

It's even worse than that. If they do decide to sacrifice a creature, it'll come around to you and you will have to make the decision between 5 life or a creature. Horrible rare, indeed. I, for one, think it's worse than Lava Axe, even if it's one mana cheaper.

Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future, where my evil is law!

Except, you are all forgetting the main component of this spell.

GREED.

"I don't want to lose 5 life, I will let the other guy do that, I have a disposable Saproling, I'm ok."

So as you see, especially in multiplayer, people will chump sacrifice to keep their five life. IMHO

2BB for 5 life loss is incredibly good.

Is there better?

I think this was an attempt to make something like The Abyss. But it sure didn't work out too well.

People arguing about the power level....almost have a point. But I feel like they are close to wanting to write it off as trash. I feel like today it would make an amusing Uncommon with strictly-casual potential, but potential nonetheless. :)

I had a friend that used this in a creature-less deck. It almost always backfired.

Also: Aku is a floating fortress city in the Uuserk Marshes, built by the mundungu, the alliance of Shadow Guild and Shaper Guild mages from Zhalfir. The city was constructed to hold the pillar tombs of Zhalfirin royalty, preventing them from being desecrated by grave-robbers. Thus, Aku was built in Uuserk, the most inhospitable region of Zhalfir. Its powerful mages and flesh-hungry djinn kept the demons of Kaervek away from it during the war, and were instrumental to his defeat. Kaervek was buried in one of the pillar tombs of Aku.

Aku has been phased out alongside the rest of northwestern Jamuraa since the planeswalker Teferi wanted to spare it from the horrors of the Phyrexian Invasion. It was removed from existence when Jeska destroyed the time rift over Zhalfir.

I was wondering who Aku was (I thought this was their tomb or something) and a gatherer search came up with EmrAKUl . I was gonna roll with that but lets be honest, Teferi is cooler than the Eldrazi.
