the only time i could see someone not using story circle over this would be in a multicolored deck that sucked at producing white mana... even then, you'd still be depleteing a heavy amount of mana to maintain this card...

i would not waste my braid of fire's ability on this card. rather use it for a comment storm and cast Story Circle to keep me alive.

You might use this over story circle in Pauper, but you might also just use normal COPs.

@OverfiendSurprise: Most subversively racist card in magic, ever.

This was printed in an environment where CoPs were a lot more powerful, but it's still crap. The cumulative upkeep MIGHT have been worth it if you could change the chosen color every upkeep, or if there wasn't a color choice involved at all, just "prevent all damage dealt to you by any one source".

At least they fixed this concept in Visions with Righteous Aura. Of course they went the other direction there and almost made it too good, at least for a common.
