Presumably the pseudo-deathtouch is them laughing so hard their chests burst. Black creatures don't have humor so it doesn't work.

This art reminds me of The Scream. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_scream Personally, I think it's pretty amazing. The new photoshop art can be super cool, but some of this old stuff can be great too and it has a different feel.
Also, there should be some terrible hand related jokes in the comment section:
e.g. "Hey dread specter! Lend me a hand! Oh- uh, ok. Uh... never mind. *backs away slowly*
or
