Great in any Elf deck. Gets you what you need - more elves!

Andrew's Occasional Random Card of the Day #3 - 6/29/2011 - Sylvan Messenger
With such a big war going on in their setting, Invasion block's card names often surprise me. It's full of acolytes, disciples, apprentices, emissaries, and apparently messengers. Regardless, though, this card is funny in a different way; it's a tribal card in a block about multicolor. A quick search shows me only three Elves in Apocalypse, including this one, while there are sixteen in the Invasion block. One of those is Elvish Champion, though, so it's hard to argue there. Still, Sylvan Messenger feels a little out of place. It's even too early to be a 'plant' for Onslaught, since Odyssey block was a buffer between the two in terms of the Standard format.
I'm not an Elf-deck-type, so I could be off, but I've never even really seen this card in decks of its genre, apart from its inclusion in the Elves vs Goblins Duel Deck. Contrariwise, its counterpart Goblin Ringleader gets sleeved up all the time. The ringleader says, "Jump off a cliff," everyone follows, but when the butchy elf girl mounts a kavu and unleashes her battle shout, she gets kept in the 'old green uncommons' stack.

This is not as good as the goblin version since Goblin Lackey is so awesome, but this is the second best of the cycle. Elves can pump it out pretty quickly. It's just that Regal Force ends up superior most of the time, and elves can indeed get that much mana pretty easily.
