This isn't a particularly good card - it's basically a Grizzly Bears at 5 which also happens to be a very, very, bad Black hoser. I mean, phenomenally bad. Green gets 4/4s or better for 5 with regularity, and even the occasional 4/4 for 4.

But I knew a person with the last name Bognar once, and I bet he'd love this card.

Only worth playing in a deck where YOU are the one playing the black spells, and even then, you probably would rather play something like a shade or Ebony treefolk. It's cost shouldn't be more than GG1, probably only GG.

Should have made it:

GG: And whenever an opponent plays a black spell
or
GG: and +1/+1 whenever either player plays a black spell
or
1GG/2G : The effect printed on the card.

either way, too overcosted...could of at least made it 2GG or something..

Only playable in a mostly black deck. On the bright side, with only 1 G in it's casting cost, the Gnarr is splashable.

my very first card.

note: it triggers off any black spell, even your opponents'. However in multiplayer, I'd recommend giving this shroud immediatly.

Spells like Shifting Sky makes this card slightly more playable. Not worth it's cost if you don't create a color filter.

This isn't a black hoser. They can just play their spells after attacking. It's to be used when you are playing black spells. The fact that it's only one colored mana helps.

Prototypical kiln fiend?

This is just a limited filler, and a bad one at that.

It's something of a poor man's Kiln Fiend if you load it up with Virulent Swipe, Dirge of Dread and Tainted Strike. Also don't forget removal to get rid of blockers will pump him, too. Certainly a much more interesting gambit!

That said, you could also choose to play a good creature instead.
