It actually already was a modern revision of an even older workhorse back then. But you're right, a revision of this card would still need some serious improvement not to be something to laugh at these days.

I'd like to see a version of this with the ability costing 1 and itself costing 1 or 0.
once you can pay 7, vengeful archon's ability is how this card should be. since its initial cost is so low though, it could be : Prevent the next X damage dealt to you or a creature you control.

Very mana hungry. I wouldnt dream of running it, but I can see it being used to give red decks a hard time in a strong ramp deck.
