BTW, does anyone else think the art looks like the Mr Hyde from Van Helsing minus the tophat?

Not quite Mr. Hyde.
The original Mr. Hyde certainly was a homicidal bastard, but he wasn't a brute. In the movies, on the other hand...

Note that if you use the Scholar on your own turn, the Brute will transform right back before you have a chance to do anything with him.

It's a bit fragile, but good if your opponent has no blockers. It's ability is at least better than the usual "This creature attacks each turn if able"

@sonorhC: I think Civilized Scholar gets to untap right before his transformation process, so you can definitely transform and attack with ***cidal Brute on your own turn.

Who put this utility creature on the back of my 5/1?

I hadn't seem the creature types Advisor or Mutant in a while. Funny that they put both in the same card.
Like Zombie Cutthroat this was a flavor and concept win, but a creature fail. If he's a 5/1 ready to swing on turn four (minus a card), then you've done the equivalent of casting accelerate on your dross crocodile but you're spared the mana cost in exchange for losing the cantrip.
(incidentally, I would TOTALLY play a 0 cmc accelerate minus the cantrip)
This creature is a lot of empty sound and fury. It's too bad. I would like for Jekyll and Hyde's homage to have been a more interesting and playable creature. Given its drawback, 5/3 trample would not have been unreasonable for this creature.
@sonarhC
When a creature transforms, it is still the same permanent. So if you have controlled the Scholar since the beginning of your turn and transform him before combat, he can attack. The Scholar untaps if you discard a creature card.
If you transform him after combat, he'll probably transform back. However, if you attacked with the Civilized Scholar, then managed to untap him (or had vigilance) and transform him, he will not transform, because he knows that he attacked that turn.

Which barest desire did he let run free? Here is some updated flavortext.

apparently, his research wasn't very good.

You don't really have to attack with him... Activating and transforming him on your opponent's turn will give you a nice, flashy blocker who can trade with practically anything, and if you've done it once, your opponent will be wary of attacking whenever the scholar is untapped.

The 1 toughness is hilarious. He apparently dies to a hornet sting.

All of you realize this guy is a blue card, right?
Shimmering Wings, Wingcrafter, Spectral Flight? Blue has a million ways to give something flying, and you guys are worried about him dying? The mill is a bonus, sure, but Homicidal Brute is the side of this card that wins you games.

The 1 toughness really hurts him. They could have at least given him trample or something. Failing that, boosting his toughness to 2 or even 3 wouldn't hurt either.
