Ah, the good old days before Voltaic Key broke every artifact with an untap cost ever printed. And even before that, 3 colorless mana on turn 1 has always been a huge play, especially in formats where things like Black Lotus and the Moxen were legal.
Although it would be great to put out two Pithing Needles, name this and Voltaic Key, and watch your opponent slowly get pinged to death by their own artifact.

This assumes your opponent can't do anything with broken mana acceleration to beat you before one damage a turn becomes relevant.
