Well yeah, you can't afford to not be friends with him.

Love the flavor text on this guy, what a great card. The creature definitely isn't bad either.

Fun with Keen Sense, and obviously Bloodthirst cards.

Aaron's Random Card Comment of the Day #62, 2/9/11

Hrm. I might have a bit more to say had I spun up the Guildpact Rumbling Slum, but this is the Planechase one. So I need to think of what to say… Okay…

Many people wondered why we included 60-card constructed decks with the Planechase planar cards at all—why not just give players the Planes? Because the goal of the product was to sell an experience—we wanted players to be able to rip open the box, find a few other players that had just opened other boxes themselves, and have a fun semi-controlled experience built to show off what the format had to offer. If we just gave you Planes, someone might sit down at the release event with a random Standard deck against someone with a Legacy deck and someone else with a gross Azami, Lady of Scrolls Commander deck. There's a reasonable chance that in that game (a) one or more players get totally blown out because of the lopsided deck mismatches; and (b) the Planes wouldn't really matter at all. With the preconstructed decks, we could all but ensure a game paced in such a way for the Planes to shine, and relatively even strength among everyone at the table.

As for Rumbling Slum, why was he included? Well, if you want a rare red-green Elemental for your red-green Elemental deck (we did), he's the only choice. Two, he's a relatively well-known tournament card that actually has decent multiplayer applications. And three, he's a favorite fatty of Ken Nagle, one of the designers on the product.

@Aaron_Forsythe: Are you struggling to find something to say because Rumbling Slum has been all but obsoleted by the power creep in recent blocks?

Fits very well in the G / R themed decks. 4cmc with a 5/5 body, that adds a point each turn, very good addition to Green & Red. Not to mention with all the Planeswalkers floating around... This guy chips away at them too!

As much as I love decisions and downsides, the occasional "not-actually-a-downside" is pretty fun.

Great, now I will forever wonder what Aaron meant to say about the Guildpact version.

This card is way OP and I hate it on that basis, but it is a very interesting creative concept. As for Planechase, I never really thought about it but Aaron's point here makes perfect sense - selling them with decks was very much the right decision, and not just a cash-grab as I had previously assumed. Although truly ideal would have been to offer both options - simultaneously sell both planes and decks for them, side-by-side but separateable.

Man, I miss Planechase. It's too bad it and Archenemy didn't really take off.

The art asks for trample, but balance says no...

I always like a 5/5 body on turn 4 with a meaningless drawback...

Crimson, this is far from obsolete. It has a beneficial ability, not a draw back.

Also, Izzet animated an entire district. GO IZZET!

I'm sad that I was beat to the punch for Chandra's Spitfire.
What a beast.
With five people at the table, each of your spitfires gets +12/+0 for each rumbling slum.

I know, let's take a bulky 5/5 body, tack on a cool ability that murders planeswalkers, and then make it cost LESS because of that than average.

An aggressively costed and powerful Bloodthirst trigger on legs? Yes please.

Though he's now outclassed by Spellbreaker Behemoth in any deck outside of one dedicated to Bloodthirst, he's still a solid card to play.

Sure, Gruul sent them back, but it would be really nice if Rakdos was able to invite them to the party...
